New College Lanarkshire’s Coatbridge Campus opened their doors to the third and final Big Bang event for the week. After two successful events in Motherwell and South Lanarkshire all involved were on a high and we wanted to go out with a “bang”. And go out with a bang we did as we recorded our highest attendance of the week and put on some amazing STEM related workshops and employer exhibitions for the pupils:
- The employers included JP Morgan, NHS Lanarkshire, Mears Construction, RAF, WEIR Engineering and Morgan Sindall, NHS Education Scotland, Construction Industry Training Board
- Over 162 pupils and 18 teachers from 11 schools from Lanarkshire & East Dunbartonshire. The schools included Boclair Academy, Douglas Academy, Kirkintilloch High, Coatbridge High, Caldervale High, Airdrie Academy, St Ambrose High, Our Lady’s High, Chryston High, St Margaret’s High, St Maurice’s High
- 17 workshop activities
Workshops on the day included the Pit-stop Challenge where the pupils were challenged with changing the tyres on a car, CSI Crime solving, Dentistry and Substance Analysis to name a few!
We were overwhelmed with the positive feedback yet again and it was great to hear how beneficial the young people found the event as well as how much the employers and teachers found the event:
“I can do so much with my Maths qualification, there are more STEM related jobs than I thought. I didn’t realise Science can be so much fun and not enough girls do it”
Over the three Big Bang events we were able to engage with a hundreds of children and countless employers and introduce them to the world of STEM subjects and hopefully inspired as many as possible to think about what they would like to do in the future.
