Focus on Young People with Additional Support Needs

Developing Young Workforce, Additional Support Needs, The Cat's Whiskers Cafe

Meet The Cat’s Whiskers Cafe in Strathaven, a friendly, family run cafe who have put their vision into practice and provided young people with additional support needs the stepping stone into full-time employment. Cafe Manager, Catriona, her brother Paul, who has autism and their mother Penny all help run the cafe. Catriona and Penny was so concerned about the lack of employment opportunities for Paul that they started this venture and what a success it has been. The cafe has provided many benefits to these young people;

  • The opportunity to gain experience
  • A stepping stone into full time employment
  • Skills development
  • Achievement of SQA qualifications

Developing Young Workforce

Having seen the positive impacts this unique cafe has provided young people in the local area, DYW LED are excited to begin working with The Cat’s Whiskers Cafe. This future partnership will only strengthen Catriona’s vision of encouraging more employers to employ young people with additional support needs as she knows well how beneficial it has been to both her brother, her other employees as well as her business.
