Foundation Apprenticeships

Foundation Apprenticeships are courses designed for S5 and S6 pupils. These courses combine school learning, college learning and work experience.

A Foundation Apprenticeship is studied alongside other school subjects.

Pupils spend time at college and with employers, where they receive on the job training. This leads to an industry-recognised qualification.

Foundation apprenticeships are a good opportunity to try out a possible career. They can lead to employment, a Modern Apprenticeship, a graduate level apprenticeship, or other courses at college or university.

Foundation apprenticeships subject areas

Foundation apprenticeships are available in the following subject areas:

  • Business skills
  • Civil engineering
  • Creative and digital media
  • Engineering
  • Financial services
  • Hardware and system support
  • Scientific technologies
  • Social services – children and young people
  • Social services and healthcare
  • Software development

What apprenticeship you can do depends on what is available in your area.  Talk to your teachers at school or tutors at college to find out more.

Modern Apprenticeships

With a Modern Apprenticeship you learn on the job. You get valuable workplace experience while you work towards a qualification.

There are at least 80 types of Modern Apprenticeships available, in a wide range of careers from healthcare and financial services to construction and IT. You get on the job training, designed by employers especially for you. You can gain general skills such as teamwork and timekeeping, as well as skills specific to your career choice and first-hand knowledge of how the industry works. And your work experience counts towards an industry-recognised qualification.

You’re paid a wage during your Modern Apprenticeship (either the National Minimum Wage or the standard rate of pay for apprenticeships in that industry) and you receive a certain amount of paid holiday per year in addition to bank holidays.

Graduate Apprenticeships

Graduate Apprenticeships provide a new way into degree-level study (up to Masters level) if you’re currently in work or want to go straight into work after school.

A Graduate Apprenticeship can help you build the skills and knowledge you need for the industry of your choice – you’ll spend most of your time learning on the job, and getting paid, but you’ll also be studying at a university or college.

In 2018, there will be 11 Graduate Apprenticeship courses on offer at 12 different universities and colleges in Scotland.
