The locally based Blantyre employer has sites and contract work all over the UK and this year we added a further 14 candidates to experience the 3-day summer school event. Story Contracting welcomes young people into the business every year, providing them with opportunities to see first-hand STEM subjects brought to life, develop their employability skills and reach their full potential.
The Summer School will give young adults, aged 15-18-years-old, the chance to join the business and is open to people across Story Contracting’s operational areas in Carlisle, Birmingham, Normanton and Scotland through Developing the Young Workforce. The students will learn more about Story and the construction industry by spending the week working with various departments, as well as having the opportunity to visit one of Story’s live sites.
This year we visited the construction project at Thornliebank Station near Glasgow and the employer is supporting works to decarbonize the railways and the line included on the day was East Kilbride to Glasgow. The students taking part were able to see the planning and execution of a civil engineering project to increase the height of over 40 bridges on the line to allow for overhead power cabling. This is a joint project delivered on behalf of Network Rail and the 18 month project will see the complete rebuild of a Victorian Bridge, while still operating the railway and multiple utility contractors. An amazing project management experience for all involved.
